In Belgium, and particularly in Wallonia, flood risk is no longer just a river overflowing. Runoff, intense rain, saturated networks and vulnerable land turn a few hours of rainfall into a real problem for a home, a business or an infrastructure.
2026 reminds us the phenomenon is very real
The heavy rainfall events of recent years show that flooding remains a concrete reality. At the end of May 2026, violent storms caused localised flooding, mudslides, impassable roads and emergency call-outs in several municipalities of the province of Liège; in Haneffe the situation was particularly severe. A flood can be fast, localised and hard to anticipate at neighbourhood level.
A flood does not always come from the river
When we picture a flooded house, we imagine a river bursting its banks. Yet water reaches homes with no watercourse nearby: very intense rain runs off roads, sloping land, yards and impermeable surfaces, and drainage networks saturate quickly.
The geography of your plot matters enormously
Two homes in the same street can face very different levels of risk. The slope of the land, the position of the house, the presence of a garage or basement, low points, gutters and drainage capacity all play a part. A cellar below road level quickly becomes a collection point for water.
Can a flood really be prevented?
Guaranteeing a home will never be affected is rarely possible. But the consequences of a rain event can be greatly reduced by thinking about the path the water will take: harvesting rainwater, slowing its arrival, encouraging infiltration where the soil allows, improving drainage and protecting sensitive points.
The lifting pump: equipment that can make the difference
In some configurations a lifting pump is a genuine safeguard: it automatically removes water when a drainage point sits below the network or when gravity flow is not enough. But a pump is not chosen on its advertised flow: head, pressure losses, pipe diameter, the volume likely to arrive and the operating frequency matter just as much.
Prevent rather than repair
A well-designed installation combines several devices: sump, lifting pump, level alarm, non-return valve, drainage, rainwater harvesting, a suitable drainage network and, where relevant, a backup pump. The aim: not to wait until the water is already in the cellar to act.
Climate change makes things harder still
Intense rainfall is an added challenge for infrastructure and homes. In Wallonia, flood risk includes watercourse overflow, concentrated runoff and heavy-rain phenomena. Managing water on the plot and the networks' ability to absorb or drain volumes quickly are becoming major issues.
A new way of thinking about water
Faced with intense events, a simple logic guides design: harvest, slow, infiltrate where possible, drain, protect. Water is no longer just waste to remove, but a flow to control.
