Laying and replacing water pipes in Belgium: when should you renew your network?

A water pipe stays in service for many years. But over time, materials age, fittings deteriorate and leaks become more frequent. In old installations, the problem is not always a visible leak: an undersized, scaled-up or ill-suited pipe drops the pressure and limits the performance of the whole installation. Replacing pipes means starting again with a more reliable network suited to today's needs.

Repeated leaks first: a succession of leaks points to a pipe or fittings at the end of their life, and patching each one ends up costing more than a renovation. Insufficient pressure next — too small a diameter, too long a pipe, pressure losses, corrosion, scaling, a faulty valve or a pump problem: before replacing, the real cause must be identified.

Finally, an ageing pipe was often designed for very different needs. More sanitary appliances, an irrigation system, a professional activity: the existing network no longer keeps up.

A professional renovation starts with analysing the installation: starting point, end points, required flow, available pressure, network length, level difference, suitable diameter and material, site or building constraints. Diameter is particularly important: too small a pipe increases pressure losses and severely limits the available flow.

For a buried pipe, the job runs through route marking, preparation, excavation, trench bed preparation, laying, connections, tests, leak testing, backfilling and reinstatement. Walloon technical specifications set precise rules for laying in trenches, cleaning pipes, their alignment and the making of joints.

Depending on the job, different materials can be considered, notably HDPE or other systems suited to water and to the project. The choice depends on diameter, pressure, length, soil type, depth, obstacles and the use of the water. There is no universal pipe.

It is not always necessary to renew the whole network. A study identifies the parts that are really problematic: a buried pipe, a connection, a main supply, a badly degraded section, the pipe between a well and the building, the supply to a specific appliance. Works are limited while reliability improves markedly.

The connection between the outdoor pipe and the building is a sensitive point: it must guarantee watertightness, mechanical protection and access to the parts that need maintenance. Walloon technical specifications govern how connections between the pipe and the building are made.

When a building has several water sources — public network and a well or tank — the networks are designed to prevent any contamination of the public network. This separation is essential, with particular attention to backflow risks whenever a supplementary supply is used.

Replacing a pipe is not only about stopping a leak. A well-thought-out renovation improves flow, stabilises pressure, reduces pressure losses, removes ageing sections, increases reliability, eases maintenance and adapts the network to new equipment — particularly worthwhile during a building renovation or a major change to the installation.
