Water filter maintenance: why your installation needs regular servicing

A saturated cartridge cuts the flow, drops the pressure and can encourage stagnation. When to replace, which signs to watch, how a service is carried out.

Published on 2 min read

Water filters play an essential role in many domestic, commercial and technical installations: they retain particles, protect equipment and improve water quality depending on the type of filtration. But a filter only works if it is maintained. A saturated cartridge, a clogged filter or poorly cleaned equipment reduces flow, causes pressure loss and, depending on the system, encourages stagnation. Weber Water services, checks and replaces filtration elements.

Why service a water filter?

A filter accumulates the particles it retains; the more it clogs, the harder water flows. The consequences: lower pressure at the tap, insufficient flow, less effective filtration, a fouled filter housing, premature wear of equipment and a risk of stagnation. The SPW recommends servicing equipment installed in homes, notably filters and softeners, to maintain good microbiological quality of indoor water.

Not all filters are the same

Sediment filters retain particles, sand, silt and suspended matter. Activated carbon filters address certain taste, odour or specific compound issues depending on the model and the water. Technical protection filters, placed upstream of certain equipment, limit particles entering the installation. Choice and replacement frequency always depend on the model, water quality and consumption.

When should a cartridge be replaced?

There is no universal lifespan. Frequency depends on the filter type, volume consumed, incoming water quality, amount of particles, level of filtration sought and the manufacturer's recommendations. Some filters have a clogging or pressure indicator that signals saturation.

Which signs should alert you?

Pressure that gradually drops, abnormally low flow, a heavily discoloured or loaded cartridge, a very dirty housing, unusual noise or operation, water with an unusual taste or smell. A diagnosis determines whether replacing the cartridge is enough or whether the problem lies elsewhere in the installation.

How is a professional service carried out?

General check of the installation, closing and securing the water inlet, depressurising the filter, opening and cleaning the housing where the system allows, replacing the cartridge or filter medium, checking seals and watertightness, recommissioning, then checking flow and pressure. For drinking water, hygiene and the manufacturer's instructions receive particular attention.

Why not wait until the filter is completely blocked?

Waiting for a major loss of flow affects the whole installation: a heavily clogged filter increases pressure losses and disturbs equipment downstream. Preventive maintenance detects problems before they become a breakdown.

Weber Water: servicing and replacing your filters

Weber Water works on filtration systems for homeowners, businesses and technical installations: filter checks and servicing, cartridge replacement, housing cleaning, pressure loss diagnosis, adapting filtration, protecting pumping installations and servicing water treatment equipment.

Is your filter clogged, your pressure dropping, or do you no longer know when to replace your cartridge? We check your installation and propose filtration suited to your water and your needs.
